Tang Soo Do is a relatively modern martial art based on the Korean art of Soo Bahk Do, which has existed for many centuries. Soo Bahk originated during the Silla Dynasty (618 to 935 A.D.) “Tang Soo Do” translates to mean “Way of the China hand”. “Tang” represents the Tang Dynasty of China. “Soo” means hand and “Do” is a way or system.
The late Hwang Kee, founder of Tang Soo Do, mastered Soo Bahk Do and Tae Kyun, a Korean system known for its powerful kicks. In 1936 he traveled to Northern China where he encountered a martial arts style called the Tang Method. From 1936 to 1945 he combined the techniques of Soo Bahk Do with those of the Tang Method and developed Moo Duk Kwan Tang Soo Do. It was officially registered in Korea on November 9, 1945 as the Korean Soo Bahk Do Association. The art we now know as Tang Soo Do is a composite style made of 60% Soo Bahk Do and 40% Chinese arts. It is both a hard and soft style.
Absolutely YES!!!
Anyone can learn no matter your ability or disability. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and martial arts builds on both. Strengthening where you are weak and building on your most positive attributes! Martial Arts prepares you physically and mentally for all aspects of self-defense including courage and determination.
Many children grow up getting bullied and can actually last into adulthood. Bullies thrive on people they feel they have power over. In many cases bullies are bullied themselves so they need to find someone they can bully to feel they have some control.
Martial arts not only teaches self defense but also confidence, self control, and discipline. All of these are needed to show a bully they should just move on and bully elsewhere. Many times just standing up to a bully with courage is all it takes to make a bully back off with out anyone getting hurt which is what self defense is all about!
The best answer is it largely depends on you. For most people, it takes from 3 ½ to 5 years or before they test for Cho Dan (First Degree Black Belt). How close you get to that 3 ½ year mark is based on how diligently you train and meet the other requirements such as class time.
If you show up to class once in a while as opposed to every week it will take much longer. We are not what many have termed "Mc Dojo" where you can get a black belt in 18 months because you pay your dues. You must show that you have learned the necessary steps to earn the next higher belt!
Then just remember, getting a black belt is only the beginning! 1st degree Cho Dan means simply that you have mastered the basics. Now it's time to begin advanced training!
A Heyong/Hyung is the Korean term for “form” or “kata”. They are what you’re watching when you see large groups of martial artists moving in unison through a predetermined routine of blocks, punches and kicks.
In Tang Soo Do you’re required to learn 13 open hand forms and 5 weapons forms. That’s a total of 18 different forms a student has to learn and become proficient in on their journey to first-degree black belt. Regularly practicing forms is an important tool for improving conditioning and focus as a student continues to make progress.
All forms are designed to teach stances, punches and kicks which become more advanced and are all based on traditional Chinese and Korean martial arts. Some date back several hundred years.
Ultimately they provide an unmatched level of conditioning, strength, focus and balance no other exercises can give while guiding your body through muscle memory and speed training.
